Global Competencies Research Project

critical global competencies (GC) necessary for success when operating in
a global business environment. These 16 GCs fall into three categories: cognitive-perceptual
management; relational management; and self management.

cognitive orientations direct our opinions, evaluations, and ultimately our
behavior towards others. It assesses people's tendency to be rigid in their
view of cultural differences, their tendency to be judgmental about those
differences, and their ability to deal with complexity and uncertainty.
The Relational Management category assesses a person's orientation
towards fostering positive relationships in a global business environment.
It measures the importance of relationships; attentiveness toward others'
interpersonal attributes that help nurture and maintain relationships; and
awareness of one's self and the impact one has on others.
The Self- Management category focuses on peoples' strength of identity.
To be effective in a global context, a person must be able to understand,
